Smashing Stereotypes, Visually Impaired Students Kick Off Bharti College’s Fest

“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”
– Helen Keller

Helen Keller had no sight but she had the vision to change her life and to motivate people like her. Everybody talks a lot about the welfare of those who are visually impaired but very few of them take it seriously.

The students’ union of Bharati College, University of Delhi came up with a different idea to raise awareness and voice support. The students’ union organizes the annual cultural fest, Abhivyakti, where renowned personalities and politicians are invited.

But this year, it’s a bit different. A press note released says:

“Inauguration function of Annual Fest at Bharti College, March 2019 – Press Note

Bharti College, University of Delhi is organising its annual Union Festival “Abhivyakti” from 11th March to 13th March, 2019. This year, “Abhivyakti” with its theme, “Sight with a Vision” stands out from other college festivals in its attempt to move towards a more inclusive and progressive society. To take a step in this direction, the Students’ Union and Union advisors (Dr. Madhuri Sharma and Mr. Nagendra Kumar) have decided to move away from the conventional practice of having members from mainstream society as chief guests and instead, have called very talented, very inspiring, though underrepresented/invisible visually impaired undergraduate students of University of Delhi. This is one of the many small steps taken by the Union towards making the college in particular and the society in general a more inclusive and egalitarian space. Through the inclusion of these students, we intend to bring their perspectives/aspirations/everyday challenges to the forefront and make meaningful/constructive changes in their lives.”

DU is popular for its fests where personalities from fashion, politics, cinema and music make regular and notable appearances. There is a long-standing tradition for fests to be peppered with star presence, sometimes almost seeming miraculous for an average DU student.

Bharti College’s student union is attempting to break stereotypes and establish new traditions in the process. The college’s union adviser Dr. Madhuri Sharma says, “Our motto behind having this theme was to encourage the talent of these underrepresented students. We always call politicians and celebrities to inaugurate our fests. We appreciate that. But we need to tell the society that everyone is entitled to the same respect and honor.”

Well, yes! Don’t forget to mark your calendars to be a part of this incredible moment!
