Categorizing Terrorists As ‘Misguided Youth’, ‘Freedom Fighters’ Or ‘Gunmen’ Is Wrong

Some people and media outlets’ reaction to the terror attack in New Zealand clearly shows how the world is still not united against terrorism.

Different sections of the society treat terrorists as good or bad depending upon the kind of impact they have on their interests and propaganda. Act of terrorism is being defended citing ideologies, exploitation, religion and political issues.

Many media outlets described the New Zealand attacker who carried out the attack on mosque as “Gunman” and have clearly refrained from using the word terrorist. Many people like Fraser Anning, who is a Senator from Queensland defended him by blaming immigration program for this attack. In his words “the real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place.”

The same thing happened after the Pulwama attack where the attacker was being called a misguided youth, some even went on to call him a freedom fighter. His actions were being justified by citing an incident in which he was beaten up by the police.

We can’t get rid of terrorism until and unless we unite against it. There is always a section of society who protects and support these terrorists. Recent move of China, in which they blocked India’s attempt to put Jaish-e-Mohammad’s chief Masood Azhar in the global terrorist list affirmed this theory. China did this even after Jaish-e-Mohammad took responsibility for the Pulwama attack.

Concrete action against terrorism can be taken only when everyone is committed against its eradication.
