The Subtle Art Of Developing A Sense Of Intellect

It is often said that an intellectual is one who knows where his mind is going. Although mental stamina and exercise play a key role in developing intellectuality, there are several other traits one might need to have in order to develop a sense of intellect. Following are my personal tips on how to develop your inner self in an intellectual manner:

  1. When I choose to forget for a moment who I am now, it makes it possible for me to leap ahead into who I might turn into; this doesn’t mean completely neglecting your individuality but putting the focus off yourself and tuning into the extraordinary vulnerabilities that lie inside you.
  2. Pursue a deep inhibition of intellectual pleasure that lies in thinking out of the box. Thinking out of the box not only unlocks diverse spheres of happiness, it also increases mental stamina.
  3. Don’t over-assess either optimistic or pessimistic things realistically. Though initially, you may seek pessimism to face reality, soon you will realise truth often lies in an equilibrium of optimistic and pessimistic thought patterns. The truth lies in the statement claiming humans aren’t designed to be happy, we are meant to be useful.
  4. Read a lot – Biographies are a good way to start. Read books that contradict your belief system; for an intellectual is a person who is at ease with challenging his perspective.
  5. Exercise your brain. Thinking is a lot like practicing maths, it hurts first, but it needs consistent practice and effort. To be a world-class intellectual, one needs to practice thinking each day.

My Parting Thoughts:

Thinking isn’t easy. This is probably the reason why few people are involved in it, but for sure it’s rewarding. Both the fruits and the process are smooth for the one who indulges in consistent thinking, for the brain is what separates homo sapiens from other beings, and it could be argued, brings one closer to the supreme creator.
