Youth Ki Awaaz Survey Reveals What Young India Is Thinking This Election

The General Elections are nearly upon us, perhaps the most crucial elections for India, to date. In a country where nearly two-thirds of the population is formed by young people under the age of 35 years, the youth vote and opinion ahead of the election carry a lot of weight. Assertive, independent and fiercely pro-choice, it is this youth that holds the key to making the world’s largest democracy a true success story. For political parties, media houses and citizens alike, knowing the youth ideology and outlook for this election is crucial.

So, how well does Young India know the election process, and what are the most important issues they care about? We put out a survey, to find out. The survey drew 16,439 complete, unique responses from people aged between 16 – 40+ years from across the gender spectrum in T1 and T2 cities in India. The states that drew the largest number of responses were Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

Audience Demographics

The questions in the survey endeavoured to understand the following key points:

1. Overall level of awareness among young people on their Right to Vote and the responsibilities that come with it
2. Key factors that impact young people’s voting preferences and patterns
3. Key issues, priorities and concerns of young people from the upcoming elections

The survey responses threw up interesting insights, chief among them being the following:
