We Are All Responsible For Corruption In Our Society

You must have heard people complaining about the ever-so-rising problem of corruption in India. It seems like people are tired of it and want to get rid of it at any cost, but it would not be an exaggeration if I say that society itself is responsible for the rising levels of corruption. I have felt it personally while interacting with people.

When my friend came to know that I am preparing for civil services exam, his first response was “ab toh croron me khelega.” I was shocked to hear that. Similarly, my relatives always say that “Chalo acha hai, hamare bhi pehchaan me koi bureaucrat hoga toh hamare kaam ayega”. It means people are already expecting someone to indulge in corrupt practices.

One can see countless cases of corruption involving politicians and bureaucrats everywhere. Forget the politicians, even the clerks working at random government departments are corrupt. In India, most of the work gets done through insider networking. Someone having contacts with influential people is considered powerful. People are being recruited to influential positions using unfair means.

Indians are somewhat emotional and are put under immense pressure of obligations. Even if an officer is honest, he/she has to be corrupt for the sake of friends or relatives. Simply put, people should not misuse their relations and give rise to a corrupt society. Officers and politicians can’t be blamed for giving rise to corruption because people are equally responsible.
