Dear Bollywood, Learn A Lesson Or Two From Web Series Like Kota Factory

I have one question for Karan Johar, our dearest flag bearer of nepotism (a title bestowed upon him by Kangana Ranaut). Has he never seen web series like Kota Factory? I think not, for if he had, he himself would have ensured that his recent movie, Student Of The Year 2, never gets released.

With an IMDb rating of 1.9/10, this film proves that it is nothing but just a get-together for a bunch of star kids at one of their regular parties, because I am yet to come across a school where students wear hot pants and drive the most luxurious cars. Like seriously!?! I remember how we were strictly instructed to tie two ponytails and the length of our skirt was never allowed to be above our knee, and not being able to get a seat in the school bus was just another regular day. How lucky are these kids who get to study, if at all they do that, in such utopian schools? Sigh!

With films like Stree, Uri, Newton and others, the viewers felt a sense of hope, that Bollywood was changing for the better, but again you see films like SOTY getting released, and you realize how vulnerable we had become for a moment. This is the very reason why web series work like paracetamol.

With movies like SOTY running in the theatres, there is a parallel world that exists these days on YouTube, which brings you closer to the real life of a student. It’s called Kota Factory. I’m sure if not all, then at least the majority of the students must have already seen the aired episodes, because we all have been/are/will be a part of this rat race once. Web series have never failed to amuse the common public- yes the common public- because commoners aren’t used to unnatural, larger than life, institutions that Bollywood tries to showcase.

Many might argue that the idea of films is to entertain us and give us a break of 3 hours or so from our mundane lives. Oh Really?!? Have you seen the latest episode of Kota Factory, which left all the viewers with a smile on their faces right from the beginning?

Most love stories, suspense and thrillers of Bollywood are as difficult to estimate as a Pythagoras triplet. And then we have web shows like Pitchers, Little things, Mirzapur, that aren’t always star-studded, but make sure we get characters like Naveen, Kavya, Mickey, Kaleen Bhaiya and not to forget the recent favourite Jitu Bhaiya.

The inclination of the viewers towards web shows has led actors and actresses of the Big Bollywood to try their luck in this field too, proving this will soon be THE next big thing.

It’s time for Bollywood, too, to present their viewers with stories based on facts and actual emotions. Long gone are the days when films were more about music, dresses and stars with an almost nilpotent story. With changing times and changing viewers, we demand content that can be easily related to, or, stories that are based on true events. Also, on a very serious note, the performance by the ones in the web shows is way better than many of our celebrated actors.
