Do we really need a Men’s Commission in India?

A recent demand of National Commission for Men has been made by a section of civil society activists .While it would be unfair to dismiss such a demand at the outset without going into the merits of such a demand, let us see why National Commission for Women was created in the first place. The NCW was created during the early 90’s with a stated objective of eliminating all sorts of violence against women. In a traditional patriarchal society where the power structure remains unfairly tilted towards men, women have to face a lot of harassment and abuse.Women facing dowry harassment, sexual abuse are often reluctant to speak up fearing social stigma or retialiation from the accused.A divorced woman faces much social stigma and is often ostracized by the society.Almost all societies of the world are patriarchal and India is no exception. It would be a grave injustice to women if such a body is ever constituted by the government. It would only serve the purpose of upholding patriarchy, the evil which feminists are fighting against and trying to abolish from the face of the world.
