With Literally Everything Just A Click Away, Why Is Gen Y Unhappy?

They say the times have changed. The elders say “Our times were different, your generation is much privileged.” I agree with this. Most of the post-independence generations in India struggled financially. The political scenario was still unstable and states were being reorganized. Despite all the political, social and economic unrest, life was simple. Employment was plausible, luxuries achievable and expectations reasonable. Perhaps, this is exactly why our generation is facing hardships.

What Differentiates Us From The Previous Generations?

1. Emotional Security:

Our previous generation had to oblige to the societal norm of following the conventional path of – education, job, and marriage. Whereas, we have succumbed to a different route altogether. The idea of casual dating through applications has given birth to a highly emotionally insecure generation. Relationships are temporary and marriages short-lived. Owing to career constraints and trust issues, it has become a lonely world. Divorce rates are high and children out of such marriages are often traumatized for life.

2.Valueless Education:

We are comparatively more educated than our previous generation. Graduation from premier institutes is no big deal, but our degrees do not guarantee jobs. The advent of Artificial Intelligence has made a remarkable difference to job creation. It is the era of underemployment.

3. Limitless Luxury:

We are insatiable as a generation. Our materialistic expectations are sky high, but is it our fault? Different innovations and technological boom are to be blamed for this. Every other day we have an improvised version of a luxury car being launched or designer brands being showcased. For the previous middle-class generations, owning a car was a luxury.

Our parents were never a part of the rat race that we are currently in.
