Here Are 6 Things To Remember As You Prepare For College Admissions

Choosing the best college for higher education is not child’s play. Various factors like the ranking of the college, the quality of its staff, extracurricular activities, etc. are taken into consideration while applying for admission at colleges. Landing up at the right college gives one a lot of memories for their lifetime whereas a wrong choice of college might become a reason of regret for many students.

Thus, it would be no exaggeration to say that choosing the perfect college is as difficult as taking your board exams. Here are some of the things which will prove to be immensely helpful while shortlisting colleges for your higher education:

1) Give Preference To The Course

Due to the increasing competition and high cut-offs, there is a possibility that you might not get admission into your preferred course in your dream college. In such cases, don’t make the mistake of choosing any random course for the sake of getting admission into your desired college. Always give more preference to the course. In the end, your subjects of graduation will open up employment opportunities for you.

2) Consult Seniors

Talk to your seniors, whenever you need more clarity. They will be able to guide and help you a lot in deciding the college through their own experiences. Try to find a senior or an alumnus from the same institution where you want to pursue your higher education from, to know about the pros and cons of studying in that college.

3) List Down Your Priorities

It is extremely important that you list down what you expect from the three years of your college life. Do you wish to engage in some extracurricular activity in college and excel in it? Or is it academics and the teachers that matter to you the most? After listing down your priorities, look for the college that matches most of your criteria.

4) Proximity

A majority of classes in college start early in the morning. Students who have to commute for long hours from home to college usually miss these classes. Thus, studying in a college that is located far away from your house might turn out to be a bad choice.

There is a high possibility that you might miss a lot of classes at your college due to the long hours of travel and this might eventually have adverse impacts on your attendance and performance.

5) Don’t Make Your Decision On The Basis Of Rankings Alone

Don’t let college rankings influence your decision because ranks may vary depending upon the parameters set by the organisations/agencies which come up with them. Always consult educated seniors before making any choice as they will be able to guide you better.

For instance, according to the India Today Rankings 2017, which are considered by a number of people, Indraprastha College for women is the 8th best science college in Delhi. As a result, a science student might decide to pursue science the said college.

However, according to the official website, only the Computer Science course offered by the college comes under the typical science category. In reality, IP College for Women is known for its humanities and commerce courses.

6) Make The Best Out Of Your College Life

It is important that irrespective of whether you get into your desired college or not, you must fully enjoy these three years of your life. You can turn your college into the perfect college by making good friends, enjoying your college life with them and trying to become a better version of yourself with each passing day.
