No More Half-Hearted Biology Lessons In The Name Of Sexuality Education!

Let us talk about comprehensive sexuality education or CSE, a more inclusive term than sex education, in India. As of today, it is a non-existent notion in the minds of orthodox Indian educators. One of the major reasons why CSE is still absent from our curriculum is because many people believe that it promotes sex. However, studies suggest that CSE at schools help young people to make informed choices about their body, therefore, causing them to postpone their sexual debut.

In the absence of CSE, young people are forced to rely on unreliable sources to find answers to sex and sexuality-related questions. They start relying on the internet and media for information that their schools and parents failed to provide. The information thus gained is not only inaccurate and incomplete but also harmful. Isn’t it better if this knowledge is given by trusted adults?

Several people claim that sex education in India is a reality. However, what educators deliver in the name of ‘sex-ed’ is merely a half-hearted biology workshop touching upon menstruation, abstinence and sexual assault instead of proper talks on safe, pleasurable and consensual sex. I know this because I have attended these classes too.

But no more of this!

I speak for the millions of adolescents when I say that we demand comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) classes in all schools – government and private.

CSE comes along with several benefits like:

1) Helping to create a generation that is more aware.

2) Reducing the potentially negative consequences of sexual behaviour like unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and child sexual abuse.

3) Increases well-being by enhancing the quality of life and relationship of young people.

4) Allows young minds to be able to give and take consent, become more aware of their sexual desires and learn to become more responsible.

CSE has undeniable benefits that even the most conservative Indians cannot argue with.
