Tabrez Ansari’s Death Is The 11th Instance Of Hate Crime In India This Year

The Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, condemned the death of a young man at the hands of a mob in Saraikela, Jharkhand, and said he was very sad to hear it. He also said that it was not fair to put all the citizens of the state in the same category for this incident. In this case, the law will do its work, but it is not right to blame the whole state and defame it, because in Jharkhand, there are so many good people.

He added that the culprits would not be spared. On this issue, the whole country stands together, he claimed. The law and the constitution are capable of taking action against it. According to him, whether it is Jharkhand, Kerala or West Bengal, the criteria for judging violence should be the same. The Prime Minister said that the government has guaranteed the security of every citizen of the country and the government understands its sensitivity!

The death of a person at the hands of a violent crowd in Jharkhand is not the first such case of this year. This particular act of hatred is the 11th case of such crime in the 2019. Four people have died in mob violence this year, while 22 have been injured. In the last decade, there have been cases of 297 hate crimes in India, in which 98 people were killed and 722 injured.

Facts show that in recent years, cases of mob violence have increased. There have been 121 incidents of mob violence due to animal murder and theft since 2015, while there were only six such incidents between 2012 to 2014. From 2009 to 2019, 59 victims were Muslims and 28 per cent were related to alleged animal theft or murder, in which 66 percent of the incidents took place in BJP-ruled states and 16 percent of incidents took place in Congress-ruled states.

In Kharsawan district of Jharkhand, Tabrez was tied to a pillar and the mob beat him up for several hours before handing him over to the police. The video of this incident has also come to light, in which it is clearly seen that he’s being forced to repeatedly chant “Jai Shri Ram” and “Jai Hanuman.”

Police say that on Saturday, Tabrez died during treatment at the hospital. The attack was condemned across the country. 11 people have been arrested so far and two police personnel suspended. Tabrez Ansari’s family has demanded action against all the people involved in the crime, including the police, and the doctor(s).

Tabrez’s family claims that even after requesting many times, the police did not arrange for proper treatment and it may have been the cause of his death.

As the Prime Minister said that the law and the constitution are equipped to take action against this, I just want to ask that if it were so, then how did Tabrez die? Why are mob lynchings continuing? This is not the first nor the second, it is the eleventh case! How long will such oppression continue?

We have to think about what the mob wanted Tabrez to chant. We have to think about not only the country, but what this means for the Muslim community in India. Hindus, Muslims, Christians and many others from India live all across the world. This needs to be considered as a black spot on the country as a whole and it is of utmost necessity to correct the current situation.

Secularism separates our nation from the whole world and gives us a different identity. Therefore, we should invest in responsible nationalism, so we don’t participate or hear of such horrifying acts.
