Why Do People Continue To Take The Law Into Their Own Hands In India?

Not one day passes without an incident of misplaced anger or unnecessary violence in the world. The newspapers and television channels never run dry of such news. Our country has been witnessing a lot of aggression these days. A few days ago, it was an MLA from Indore who beat up an officer with a cricket bat while he was working on government instructions. A few days later, it was another MP from Agra seen assaulting a toll plaza personnel over an argument over paying the toll.

Down south, it was a woman forest officer who became the target of a violent mob last week over a land issue.  The question here isn’t about their judgment of the situation, the question is about them taking the law into their own hands. It is about them getting aggressive and stepping into the role of the police or court which, in my view, isn’t right.

A mob, led by a member of the state’s ruling party, was protesting against a tree plantation drive on Sunday. They brutally attacked a female forest officer.

Is Aggression Fueled By Fake News?

Resorting to aggression and taking the matter into one’s own hands shouldn’t be an option for anyone. Be it the powerful or powerless (who may feel helpless at times), aggression shouldn’t turn into violence or bloodshed. Among these incidents, mob lynchings have become very common, many of which are fuelled by viral messages and fake posts on social media.

The line between fact and opinion is diminishing and all this is leading to aggravated violence. Be it cow vigilantes killing and injuring several men on suspecting cow slaughter or people avenging in the name of faith, the darkness of aggression is seeping everywhere. No amount of power or emotions should drive a person to take such actions. Life has worth, peace has worth and justice has worth but none of these demands such aggression. The rising levels of aggression need to be controlled.
