So I have started a petition to urge Air India to stop the use of single-use plastic cutlery.
Last month, I flew Air India, and I got six meals during the flight, which obviously came with plastic cutlery. Now I request you to do the math as to how much waste the airline generates daily. I am sure people are aware of the alternative of switching to metal or wooden cutlery, if not, I am sure now they’ll know.
Last year, on World Environment Day, India was the host country, and the theme was “beat plastic pollution”. As a government-owned enterprise, Air India should think of reducing its mass plastic and not add to it.
Single-use-plastics neither make it to a landfill nor can be recycled. A full 32% of the 78 million tons of plastic packaging produced annually is left to flow into our oceans, which is equivalent to pouring one garbage truck of plastic into the ocean every minute. This is expected to increase to two per minute by 2030 and four per minute by 2050. By 2050, this could mean there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s ocean.
It’s time for us humans to stop being selfish and thinking of our comfort, and instead, start taking steps to make lives of all organisms in our environment better.
So, as a carrier which has our country’s name attached to it, they must help in the campaign of reducing plastic use. This is a simple and affordable change that can help the environment and can set a good example too!
It’s our responsibility as conscious citizens to persuade organizations to take steps to cut down on their plastic waste and along with we must also make individual efforts to stop plastic products and send less non-biodegradable commodities to our oceans.
