Floods Continue To Wreak Havoc On Assam

Heavy rains have created a flood situation in Assam again. Thirty-three districts in Assam including Dibrugarh, Barpeta, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Golaghat etc. have been affected severely. Mainly Barpeta is severely affected. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing above the danger level in most of the affected areas. Nearly 5.4 million people have been displaced.

Currently, 755 relief camps and 304 relief distribution centres are being run by the authorities in the affected areas. More than 50 wild animals have died so far in the famous Kaziranga National Park. Some of the animals died while trying to cross the road to save themselves from the flood, but they were hit by the oncoming vehicles. These floods are perhaps the worst to hit Assam in years. The centre needs to respond urgently before the situation in the state worsens.
