The Information Technology Act, 2000, passed by the Parliament of India on May 2000, had aimed to curb cybercrime, and to provide a legal framework for e-commerce transactions. In 2001, India and the United States had set up an India-US cybersecurity forum as part of a counter-terrorism dialogue.
Cybercrime cells have been set up in major cities, but still, most cases remain unreported due to a lack of awareness.
