Rare are the occasions when an entire nation awaits a moment as eagerly as this one. The excitement and nervousness had reached its peak during the final countdown. The mission control team was at work, quietly doing its job, oblivious to what was happening outside, focused on watching every signal coming from the spacecraft.
Chandrayaan-2’s Vikram Lander was just 2.1 kilometres away from making history when it lost contact with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Mission Control Centre. The descent was progressing smoothly for 13 minutes, after which Vikram started to deviate from its planned path just 12 seconds before it was to touch down on the lunar surface. This is a heartbreaking moment. Millions of Indian hearts sank after seeing the teary eyes of Dr K Sivan, the chairperson of ISRO.
The project amounted to ₹978 crore but not a single word of remorse was uttered by PM Modi. Kudos to the thought process of this leader. It’s a bitter truth that our economic conditions do not permit us to entertain such a failure. But I firmly believe that ‘Sampark ruka hai, Sivan nahi’ (the signal was lost, but Sivan’s determination was not). Wise people learn a lot from such experiences.
Dear scientists, you dared to make an attempt to unwrap the unrevealed secrets of the moon.
Setbacks are a part of the journey. The whole nation stands with you and believes in you because this sky is very small in front of your efforts and determination.
