The All-India selection committee in New Delhi on Saturday announced a 15-member Indian test team for the upcoming three-match test-series against South Africa starting next month. The committee also announced squad of the the Board President’s XI. The selection committee made only one change in the side as Shubman Gill replaced opener KL Rahul as he has scored just 664 runs in his last 30 innings. Rest of the team remains unchanged which played in the West-Indies.
The committee has made it clear by removing Rahul from the squad that Rohit Sharma will be opening the innings against South Africa. Rohit has been at his peak form since the world cup, held in England this year. He scored 648 runs and finished with most runs in World Cup 2019.
The chief selector MSK Prasad (BCCI) said, “Rohit has been selected in the side as an opener. He will open in the three matches and also for the Board President XI. It is unfortunate that Rahul couldn’t perform consistently. Shubman Gill has done well both as an opener and a middle-order batsman. So yes,he can be a back-up opener if needed. We are looking at him as back-up for both the slots. Young players like Mayank Aggarwal and Hanuma Vihari, who have been doing well in in the longer format of the game, have retained their places.”
The first test match of the Paytm Gandhi-Mandela trophy will be played on October 2 in Vishakhapatnam, while the second and third test match will held in Pune (October 10-14) and Ranchi (October 19-23) respectively.
