An Open Letter To The HRD Minister: We Need Regularised Correspondence Courses

Representational image

Honourable HRD Minister Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank,

It’s very unfortunate to see that there is no control over the country’s educational system. There are many institutions (UGC, TRB) that themselves pass an order during their tenure, and when another chief comes in, they change their earlier order. In between, the general public (in this case the students) are the victims. This is highly unfair.

With regard to the recent teachers recruitment boards notification, open university graduates are not eligible to teach at colleges. At the same time, the UGC says different but they don’t have coordination! The country’s premier educational institutions must maintain uniformity for the betterment of students.

The Need For Clear Notifications

Both UGC and TRB, and other premier institutions in our country often criticise Correspondence Studies, saying correspondence degree holders are not eligible for government jobs. This is simply disgraceful. They don’t have any decency! They surprise nobody by changing their orders as per their individual wishes. How do they arrive at a final consensus when there is no yardstick to measure anything with?

Why Universities Are Hiding

I am wondering why when universities publish their advertisements in news dailies, why does the UGC not do the same? This act could also show their simple marketing strategies. Since they know that if they publish it, no students will join their university’s distance education system. Something needs to be done since there is credibility in a correspondence degree. It has its own merit; there are still many in our country who cannot afford to continue their studies as a day scholar. Instead, they join a job and after some time they wish to continue their studies through correspondence course only, keeping in mind their future. The hope, belief and purpose of continuing education via a correspondence course is the same.

The System Needs To Provide The Way For The Competent

Therefore, I request the MHRD, Government of India, to take firm steps to regularize open university and correspondence studies offered in the country. Playing with the education system will only decline the vision and mission of education for all in our country.
