Uttar Pradesh Bypolls: Only The Opposition’s Unity Can Defeat The BJP Wave

It is once again time for political parties like BSP, SP and Congress to introspect their defeat in the concluding bypolls in Uttar Pradesh. On the whole, the only option in UP is to develop a grand bloc of SP, BSP and Congress to curb the gusto of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the elections. So long as their political leaders will not leave the greed of seats, there will not stand a solid group.

Nevertheless, the parties executed an alliance at the state level but the defeat led to their ultimate and final separation. Although the latest bypoll results have shown that the BJP still stands in the commanding position with a clear victory over two seats one in Hamirpur (UP) and another in Badharghat reserved assembly seat in Tripura, yet experts are of the opinion if the alliance had lasted, the results would be different at least in UP state elections.

It was indeed the BSP’s maiden contest that completely failed. It could not even repeat its performance of the year 2017 when it had gathered 60543 votes as compared to 28798 votes in 2019.

While the SP by far succeeded in securing more votes than the BSP which according to the party spokesperson Rajendra Chowdhary hinted at an anti-BJP feeling. This result also hinted at exposing the BSP guilty of breaking the coalition. BJP got 38.51% votes while SP shared 24.59% votes. Will this trend persist in the coming 11 another assembly elections?

Though the Congress party has furthermore ensured one assembly seat in its favour which remains a source of solace for the disturbed commanders. It somehow indicated that the party could not be entirely written off. The general mood of the people is that this is a dwindling party. Perhaps if they win one seat, it may break the notion that the grand old party a sinking ship in its present critical phase. If Rahul Gandhi is not capable enough to sail through, his mother and sister are competently leading the party.

If we proceed to analyse roughly the polled votes in favour of BJP, SP, Congress, and BSP in UP’s Hamirpur bypoll, it can be said that these very political parties can defeat the BJP only by unified agreement. By clubbing the votes of the three opposition parties, the defeat of the BJP looks quite obvious and certain. Even clubbing votes of two parties can also bring defeat to the BJP!

The bypoll in Hamirpur assembly constituency saw a four-cornered fight with BJP, SP, BSP and Congress fielding their candidates separately into the fray. The SP came second, BSP third and Congress fourth. The SP obtained 57300 votes while BSP amassed a total of 28798 and as many as 16097 votes gone in the Congress party side. It is iterated that the BJP’s performance in the state bypoll has not been particularly remarkable, yet only alliance politics can withstand the gust of BJP in elections.

Undeniably, every political person at some point enters an alliance. Even the BJP has allied with the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra. The value of such kind of politics is not new. Even smaller parties like Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi understands this for proving its political nerve in assembly elections. Its alliance with Owaisi’s Majlis confirmed the gain in the previous polls but there appears to be a dilly-dallying attitude at this hour. Despite reluctance, both the parties’ leaders claim to come together but it will only be clear in days to come.

There is nothing static in politics. Politicians act according to the circumstances. Therefore, options remain open and each political party abides by this tried and tested procedure.
