Why Do Menstrual Taboos Continue To Plague Indian Society?

PERIODS:

Pain
Embedded in Taboos
Restrictions
Insomnia
Ostracising Temporarily
Denial
Stains

Even though India acquired its freedom 72 years ago, the niche mentality of its citizens crawls with extremely old and poor beliefs. Fortunately, I am being able to write this piece freely but for some people, the only thing that matters is “Chodo ki log kya kahenge” (Let it go, what will society say).

I read a number of articles and blogs on menstruation. Unfortunately, people fail to realise the burden of the 7 painful days each person goes through every single month. Instead of encouraging them, they deprive them of the support.

“Beta, do not enter the temple”.

“Beta, do not enter the kitchen”.

“Beta, do not enter the house”.

I mean, this is the real and the extreme level of pain anyone can ever undergo. The harsh truth is, menstrual taboo is still prevalent in our rural India.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with people having periods. They are humans too. They are made different; they are given a special pain-bearing power. I still admire Bollywood’s take on this  ‘not to be discussed openly’” kind of issue, through the film, ‘Padman‘. It’s good even if it managed to raise at least 0.01% awareness.

I feel proud to be able to openly express my feelings. I feel proud to be a girl.
