Why I Believe Storytelling Is An Integral Part Of The Tourism Industry

When people gather around the warm orange glow of a campfire, the moment a vivacious, smooth-spoken storyteller narrates a story, everyone’s attention is captivated, creating a moment of tranquillity. Such is the magic of stories; as if they cast a powerful spell on the listeners.

Not only do stories sound fascinating and mesmerising, but they are also enthralling tales that impart wondrous knowledge to the listener’s heart. Some encouraging parables and inspiring biographies have instilled massive motivation in many minds. In fact, our existence is defined by stories, no matter how big or small our experiences become.

Folktales and myths are gems that exhibit the roots to our origination. Though they are orally inherent from time immemorial, they reflect the images of our cultural notions, traditions and customs of our ancestors.

Through the looking glass of the tourism industry, the blazing art of storytelling is the perfect amalgamation for someone with a passion to travel and the desire to seek new adventures. Destinations are endowed with beautiful stories behind them. Monuments, historical sites, wildlife sanctuaries, ornaments in museums and many more are the proof that elevates the value of storytelling, making the visit worthwhile and euphoric. Taj Mahal – one of the seven wonders of the world is enriched with an amazing theme for a story, i.e., the everlasting love between Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. Indeed, the perfect mausoleum of commemoration that attracts thousands of visitors all over the world. Blessed with evergreen forests and unique diversity, the North-Eastern region of India is a stupendous zone. The historical chapters of the livelihood of most ethnic groups have a deep connection with nature, flora and fauna.

The hidden stories in every destination, natural beauty, festivals, gastronomy and traditions captivate the notion of many visitors, creating an ecstatic mystery in their minds. The paradigm shift from headhunting to modernisation provides a gateway to enthralling research.

From childhood, I have always carried an obsession for stories. I believe that storytelling uniquely blends with the tourism industry. Instead of paying a mere visit to certain places, telling the story about the particular place will enlighten the visitors and maximise the thrill of exploring. My aim is to express my passion to become a professional storyteller.

It is always a joyous moment to see the glittering smiles of tourists who are keen on hearing and learning about interesting tales and facts. It can be a refreshing trendy tool of expression of cultural and artistic traditions. Storytelling revives many expiring customs and relics. A new day brings a ray of hope to live new stories in the rotation of our lives. So, whatever it is to you, travel, explore and attain new experiences.

Live your story with reverence, compassion, mostly with no regrets, because nobody is going to live it for you. About the author: C. Lalrinfela is a passionate freelance writer from Aizawl, Mizoram.
