Why Providing Today’s Youth The Correct Opportunities Is The Need Of The Hour

a group of young people looking at the camera in the centre, such that all their faces are aligned in a circle in the photo.

This is Tushar Nikhare, IAS, 2015 batch, presently posted as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Headquarter) at Geyzing, West Sikkim.

It’s always a pleasure working with a bunch of talented youngsters. Not only is this a good break from my routine official work, it’s an opportunity to grab some energy and ideas from them. So, when an opportunity came to attend one such programme in form of the District Youth Parliament on July 25, 2019, I readily agreed to attend it.

Having attended, I am left with no doubt that Sikkim has got a bright future what with youngsters bubbling with energy and of such storehouse of ideas. It’s one thing to have awareness, knowledge and another to express the same. The organizers deserve a huge round of applause in moulding these youngsters in the form of parliamentarians. Each one of them was worthy to be given first position but that’s not what life is all about. We had to select two winners and they were absolute gems in their role. Such clarity of thought at this age is remarkable.

Sikkim is the first fully certified organic state of India and slowly emerging as a tourism capital. However, the society here suffers from some social evils like drug abuse, a high rate of suicide and several cases that get processed under the POCSO. In such a scenario, it’s heartening to know that there is capacity in the young people to become tomorrow’s youth model, someone on whom rests the hopes of Sikkim, someone who will be the torchbearer and harbinger of change, entrepreneurship and leadership.

Many of them come from humble backgrounds and have not had a smooth sailing till now. But the way they have a grasp on issues, not just local but national and international, will hold them in good stead in future. I don’t have an iota of doubt that the souls who were speaking will all excel in whatever pursuits they go after.

I wish all the participants the best in their life and to the two bright minds who will be representing West Sikkim, my best wishes are with them. The organizers undoubtedly will further hone their skills and may West Sikkim shine brighter on the national stage!

Best wishes!
