When Are We Going To Understand That Being Sad And Depressed Are Not The Same Thing?

Depression and anxiety – people are more familiar with these two words now than ever before. You look at someone who just broke up with her boyfriend, and say she is depressed; you look at someone who has a headache and say, “you look so depressed”. Is depression so common, that every other person you see, who doesn’t have a smile on their face, is considered depressed?

Talk to someone who has been through sleepless nights, crying sessions in the bathroom, fake smiles that make others believe that everything is all right, even when everything is far from all right, someone who asks themselves, a million times a day, “Am I worth it”?

That’s what depression really is. Being sad is not the same as being depressed; it never was. But we tend to use the word depressed so casually, that it really hurts me. Being depressed or going through depression not only halts your social life but also restricts “you” from being “you”. Sounds funny, I know, but it is true.

The things that made you happy no longer seem to please you, the situations that made you sad, no longer make a difference, and somehow, the activities that you loved doing no longer make any sense to you. These are the woes of a person who has been through this 10-letter hell.

Every cloud has a silver lining, and so does depression. Depression shapes you into a person who is stronger, more confident than the person you were before. You get to know who you really are and what you’re made of. It’s a struggle, believe me, but no matter what happens, don’t give up. As soon as you give up, you are left with nothing. You’ve let depression win, and let me tell you, it doesn’t deserve to win. Seek help, talk to someone you trust, vent out, and have faith that better times lie ahead.

I just want people to know, that no matter what situation they are in, other people are also suffering, also hurting; they will understand what you’re going through, so please my dear friends, don’t be afraid to talk. You deserve the best life has to offer; you and only you can make sure that you get that. So, stay resilient, happy, calm and healthy, both physically and mentally.

By associating herself with the Lalana Campaign, a holistic menstrual hygiene awareness campaign which is conducted by the Anahat NGO, Lakshmi has been slowly breaking taboos when it comes to periods and menstrual hygiene.

A Gender Rights Activist working with the tribal and marginalized communities in india, Srilekha is a PhD scholar working on understanding body and sexuality among tribal girls, to fill the gaps in research around indigenous women and their stories. Her interest lies in conducting workshops for young people on life skills, feminism, gender and sexuality, trauma, resilience and interpersonal relationships.

A Guwahati-based college student pursuing her Masters in Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Bidisha started the #BleedwithDignity campaign on the technology platform Change.org, demanding that the Government of Assam install
biodegradable sanitary pad vending machines in all government schools across the state. Her petition on Change.org has already gathered support from over 90000 people and continues to grow.

Bidisha was selected in Change.org’s flagship program ‘She Creates Change’ having run successful online advocacy
campaigns, which were widely recognised. Through the #BleedwithDignity campaign; she organised and celebrated World Menstrual Hygiene Day, 2019 in Guwahati, Assam by hosting a wall mural by collaborating with local organisations. The initiative was widely covered by national and local media, and the mural was later inaugurated by the event’s chief guest Commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) Debeswar Malakar, IAS.
