Sexism and Favoritism in NIT Calicut

Sexist advice by TnP head- Placement Orientation Day (March 2019)- Our Training and Placement Head Dr. Sameer S. M. gave us a 1.5 hr. lecture on how to sit for placements, how you have to apply for a job, what is its procedure etc. In between, he raised a point of clothes to be worn during a company visit. While explaining the dress codes to all boys and girls sitting in the hall, he said “Girls should wear properly. Companies hire you for your talent, not something else…”<his stupid body language> said it all. Whole hall started laughing…

What does he want to say, girls intentionally show-off their skin to get job offers! aren’t they technically talented enough to get a job by their technical knowledge? Since the day a girl is born, she has to work harder, prove her self that she deserves the same level of education which her brother is getting. Even after her proof , Indian parents tend to prefer to educate their son more than their daughter because of our patriarch society. After fighting with all such odds, proving herself to be capable for getting admission in NIT Calicut, she get to hear advise from her TnP head that don’t try to get job by showing your skin… that companies hire you for your talent, not… In addition to this, the whole hall including girls and boys started laughing as if some joke has been cracked. This is the mentality of our senior-most faculty for female students.

Racist approach during Placement assistance presentation (Sept 2018)- Our Training and Placement Head Dr. Sameer S. M. was giving some powerpoint presentation to students on topic- To do & Not to-do list during placement. Among all his slides there was one slide in which 1 sentence was written in Malyalam language. He already knew that his audience has more than 50% Non-Malayalees, then what was need of putting such language in presentation which only 1 particular section in audience. After this slide, he also mentioned that “Non-malyalis in audience, please ignore this”.

Warning with abusing words by our TnP head (9 Sept 2019)- Nokia company came to our campus for placement. During and after their presentation, candidates were not that energetic and interactive with company people. Seeing our sleepy attitude Dr. Sameer S. M. thrashed the whole hall in a rude tone and said “You bloody people can’t be interactive with company people. With this bloody attitude, you’ll never get a job. If this attitude continues I’ll see how you all get a job”. This was his way of charging up students for placement drive, by using abusive language.
Indeed our TnP cell works hard to get companies in college for campus placement but this doesn’t give them the right to abuse students when they don’t perform as expected.

Insult of MTech students over hostel issue (July 2019)- MTech second year students were asked to change their rooms st start of their second year. They all denied form changing rooms because the second hostel rooms were smaller, smelly and have less facilities. On this, our hostel manager became angry and shouted to all of them “We have to look BTech students also. They are more important than you MTech people, as at least they get placed in good companies and make name for our college, unlike you MTechs.”

All this is happening in a hostel where girls have been eve teased twice by male mess workers. Whenever girls go to mess corners for keeping their used plates after eating, they get to hear male mess workers singing lewd Hindi songs loudly from the backside of mess. It has happened twice, girls complained also but no action has been taken till date.
There is already an article on Youth ki Awaaz stating https://www.youthkiawaaz.com/2019/03/uses-rape-in-campus-history-as-an-example-to-discipline-female-students/. On any hostel function (example- hall day) when he is invited as a chief guest and given utmost respect, my blood boils seeing that a person who uses rape as an example to discipline female students is given so much respect and high position, that too in NIT Calicut- an institute of national importance.
