Shadow in Hospitality Industry

Dear readers, My heart full of wishes to fellow hospitality staff and workers’ I hope and believe this article will bring the changes in future days … I would like to bring the following fact which are still existing in Hospitality Industry (hotel and Lodging Industry) it’s very unfortunate mostly those who are working in this industry working as unorganized labor, no labor law applicable for them it’s very unfortunate still today no labor/industry authority no politician, and no government whoever comes to power did nothing including no NGO and media including print media (news Paper) have no the guts to addressed the atrocity prevailing in this industry – in this regards whenever gets an opportunity I use to address these issue, in many occasions I sent the letters to editor to leading news paper request to publish in their daily’s hoping that some good thing may happen but it’s very unfortunate no body come forward or hesitate to publish happen but it’s very unfortunate no body come forward or hesitate to publish Before going further let me brief about me, I worked in this industry for the past twenty two years and now for the past seven years serving for leading Hospitality Management Institute presently in Chennai We all know that hospitality and tourism industry has emerged as one of the key drivers of the growth among the service sector not only in our country but around the world hospitality industry is potentially larger employment generator for the country, beside being significant sources of foreign exchange of the country data’s shows that our Foreign Exchange Earnings increased 20.4 per cent between January – November 2017 to US Dollar 24.655 that clear hotel is the front line industry for to generate top revenue (income) for the country since human beings two main needs like food and accommodation are meet by these industry for their guest who move away from their home for their various needs such as business, official related, medical, leisure and even for education etc, apart from the service they take utmost care for their guest safety and security, it’s unfortunate due to professional compulsion their smiling face welcoming gesture are hide behind the truth – because quality of hospitality that hide everything their sufferings, nobody can identify other side of their life (face) Their dreams will come to reality? Now declining the hospitality management studies for the recent past one decade mainly due to following.. 1.LONG WORKING HOUR probably only in Hospitality (hotel) Where overtime not paid by the employee from the employer 2. PALTRY SALARY Minimum prescribe salary was not maintain in this industry for their worker except some hotel are exemption from it, it’s very unfortunate “earn while you learn” is the Hospitality Management College main slogan yes they can earn during their studies i.e. they are the cheap labor supplier for Star hotel to work as service personal (Waiter/Cleaner) during when the hotels are having their booking banquet functions or conference seminar etc, and they cut their class and go there to work for which they gets Rs 450 to 500 its very sad after completing their studies and join the industry they gets below ten thousand per month what funny. 3. Brake Shift: Nowhere in any other industry one can find in any other industry which makes the staff that leads to tremendous mental and physical stress most of the star category hotels follows- the shifts designed for their convenient (profit) only to looks after both breakfast as well as lunch sections they operates instead to straight shift gives break i.e., from 06 am to 11 am there after brake for two hours and again starts 1 pm to 6 pm where the staff are missing whole day an able to do any other personal work for they trebly missing there social life. 4. Less Career Growth Unfortunately this industry expect more personality, communication skills even though staffs are good capable enough to do their jobs until unless if they are not good in English communication than their promotion is the distant dream All these things slowly catch up and spread by word of mouth within the student community resulting declining starts for the past ten years as resulting now quality of students are not likes hotel industry like in the past, apart from those who are join HM course for them is may be their third choice (very rare some students who are wish to take up these course but unfortunately they are unable to enjoy and learn as per their desire due to their co students are not up to the mark) No confidence against their employer It’s all very sad even most of the hotel are not gives their offer letter for the selected staff , they simply ask to come and join by orally is hightly regrettable – in this juncture just imagine fate of their appointment order which is the far away dream…this mainly reducing the morality of the staff/ worker their confident level goes down and they start thinking whether they can continue or leave their job are they have any future in their carrier even they joins due to compulsion and many other reason it’s all depend upon their family background and situation all their weakness that became an opportunity for the employer My important question that, those student are successfully passed out from their respective Degree or Diploma are they are all get their jobs in Five Star Hotel? When answer is no, since it’s not at all possible due to industries expectation that mismatching with available human resources, it’s pathetic painful experience to see even after their degree and diploma most of them are working in private smaller hotel or restaurants and other catering industry just because their personality communication skill are not up to the standard category hotel expectation it is not that something need to done is like but cheating the young aspirants since at present scenario those who comes and do hotel management study they are not capable enough to cope up with the English Language which is the main star hotel language, in this regards the Hotel Management Colleges must play MAJOR ROLE they must come forward to explain all these things to those who come to study this course but that is /was not happening due to there is draw back if they starts gives counseling sincerely with regards to the hospitality industry various subjects and industry expectation etc, then things will go bad to worst result nobody will join after hearing it. But this practice is not fare enough playing with young students life …therefore my request to government and the academicians must come forward to do constructively that may ends the practice. There is another trends that occupied the industry is outsourcing , as per the various research shows that staff outsourcing in luxury hotel are day by day flourishing were the data’s clearly shows that cost reduction is the primary motive reason for among the luxury hotels, the outsourcing service majorly occurs in hotel housekeeping and food and beverage department Let us finds solution for to save the poor record of this industry labor performance and prospects, when tourism and Hospitality Industry sector has been universally recognized as an agent of development for the country’s socio economic growth etc, there by ministry of tourism simply has announcing year by year several initiative to provide further boost to tourism and hospitality industry but nothing fruitful due to its very unfortunate they fail to constantly monitor the development and not even streamline salary wages structure of the staffs working in the industry is very sad to know that the industry contribution of GDP for the country higher than any other industry when Tourism and Hospitality sustained total of 36.7 million direct indirect induced job in our country why there is no improvement in their life where their lifestyle are not change due to their poor salary and benefits are below the average comparatively in any other industry even most of them are not entitle to their retirement benefit When tourism and the hospitality industry plays major role by generate huge revenue why our government hesitate by not verify and check the real condition of the workers in this industry, when all other industry working as per the labor law then why there is no labor law in hospitality (hotel) industry? Why there is no trade union interfering in this matter is the million dollar Question My humble request is when our country have huge potential opportunity to earn from the hospitality industry, more on the other side due to globalization remarkable upcoming changes entering in food productions industry -as per the WTO reports India will attract more tourist in coming days, therefore both the center and state government push aggressively to bring to improve the infrastructure, better sanitation neat and clean accommodation etc., it’s all possible if both center and the state shows good understanding for their mutual benefit, we must try to remove by saying tourism is the state subject due to federal India structure as a result National Government can’t do much beyond the frame policy is there any option available or possible to create that same to amend there by to say tourism is central policy ? need to check – will it be possible then see the out comes from our Incredible India’s vast beaches, Himalayan peaks temples and the monument and from various Culture Arts and the crafts will brings the revenue for the country but all these things will not brings the result until unless Government of India remove the shadow of these hospitality industry and brings light from the Hospitality staffs workers.
