Why Are Women Expected To Put Their Dreams On Hold To Get Married?

We are living in 2019, so let’s decide what matters for the youth: our goals or marriage?

Before you get me wrong, let me explain why I am asking you this question. Well, in our society, we often hear our parents say,

i.) “Oh ji Sharma ji beti kitni badi ho gayi bhayii ab to iski shadi kra do…”  (Sharma ji, your daughter has grown up, its time to get her married…)

2.) “Bhayii ab achha sa ladka dekho aur shadi kra do.” (Seek a nice groom for your daughter).

3) Now you are 24/25/26, omg! now you’re 29, and you are still unmarried!

Society says, “Bhayii pakka ladki ka affair hoga, blah blah blah blah blah…” (The girl must be having an affair, and so on).

When I was a child, I always wanted to be a grown-up who took her own decisions, but now, this has become my biggest fear. This society never understands your dreams. Even your parents will not understand because they are part of society too. So, is it a crime if we realize our dreams at the age of 23 or 24 or 25, kahan likha h ki agar sapne sochne h to 18 tak socho? (Where does it say that dreams have to be decided by the time you’re 18?) Who made these rules that by the age of 21 you should have a job, and by 23 you should get married, and by 25 you should have children?

I think this is ridiculous. It doesn’t matter if you’re pursuing your dream at the age of 23 or 24 or 25. No one asks these questions to a guy—because it’s acceptable for a man to get married by the age of 29 or 30 or even after 30. Their dreams are dreams, but there is no value in our dreams. As for our dreams, there is a borderline. But why?

Why is society biased?

For me, age is just a number; there is no age limit for pursuing our dreams; we are free, and we have every right to achieve our dreams—because sometimes, our dreams are much bigger than marriage. Nowadays, every woman needs financial stability; it’s a must. I request society if someone has a dream encourage them; it doesn’t matter what their age is.
