On Saurav Ganguly’s Appointment As President Of BCCI

On October 23, 2019, the former captain of the Indian Cricket team took charge as the BCCI president. Since 2014, he was the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). I strongly feel that Ganguly did appreciable work to reform the CAB. He also prioritised the upliftment of new talent.

BCCI has always been a ‘power-tussle’ institution amongst politicians. Many political leaders including Sharad Pawar, Anurag Thakur have acted as BCCI president.

Ganguly proved his leadership skills way back. In 2000, when many teammates including the then-Captain Mohammad Azharuddin were suspended based on allegations of match-fixing, it was Ganguly who took over as the Indian Cricket team captain and nurtured it. In 2003 on his captaincy India was the runner of the world cup.

Being a sportsperson and administrating a sports institution are two different things. We have seen administrators like Sharad Pawar, Shashank Manohar, etc. who were not from a sports background but did excellent work as BCCI chief. Handling BCCI needs leadership skills.

Mixed speculation has been emanating from cricket experts and journalists over the appointment of Ganguly as the BCCI chief. people are expecting him to bring some reforms in the functioning of the BCCI. However, his tenure will only last for nine months in office as the BCCI chief.
