Three protestors lost their lives last evening, as police open fired at Mangaluru and Lucknow, during anti-CAA protests.
Mangalore:
Two victims aged 49 and 23 died of gunshots, as police opened fire at protestors, who hurled stones at them. Despite the implementation of Section 144 in Mangalore, late Wednesday evening, demonstrators took to the streets to voice their discontentment over the amendment of the Citizenship Act.
According to Mangalore’s police commissioner, PS Harsha 20 police personnel were injured as the crowd grew increasingly violent. In the end, they had to resort to lathi-charge, tear gas shelling, and open firing.
Karnataka Congress Leader, Dinesh Gundu Rao, put up a tweet condemning the action, in addition to blaming BJP:
In the tweet, he took a dig at the government stating “The statement and actions of the BJP govt and leaders is creating an unnecessary provocative environment”.
According to reports, Security has tightened around Mangaluru’s Deputy Commission’s office and nearby areas.
Lucknow:
In addition to Mangaluru, another demonstrator died, due to gunshot wounds, caused by police opening fire in Lucknow. According to Lucknow Police, the victim “was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he died during the treatment”.
The Lucknow’s DGP OP Singh stated, “I do not think the death has any connection with today’s agitation, or with police reaction and action”.
It was reported that four people, including the victim, had been admitted to King George Medical University’s trauma centre. Three of them had gunshot injuries.
The three deaths have resulted in continuing nationwide disapproval of police brutality.
