‘To Kill A Mocking Bird’ Is A Book Relevant For Today’s Time

This is a book that needs to be read by every person in this world. The book “To kill A Mocking Bird” was written by Harper Lee in the second half of the 20th century, in 1960. Widely read around the world, the book has become a classic piece of modern American literature.

The novel deals with several grave issues arising out of American society of that time like racial injustice, inequality, law and order, etc. The novel is a sort of autobiographical, the character of Scout is a portrayal of Harper lee’s own childhood life in the southern town of Monroeville, Alabama.

In the novel, Scout and Jem are two sensitive human beings, and their upbringing by their father is really praise-worthy. After reading about the characters of the two children, we can easily come to the point that there is nothing ‘inborn’ in a human being. The children will become what their parents want to make them, either foolish believers of set norms or sensitive human beings.

Despite living in a society based on racial discrimination, Scout and Jem continue to not believe in it. The theme of morals is prominent throughout this novel. The protagonist of this novel, Atticus Finch is stable in every sense. He had a good job, a good reputation, being a good human being he doesn’t adopt or transcend any of the societies set notion to himself and to his children. He is a perfect example of morals. Atticus Finch himself is the symbol of justice and equality. He shows his children how to respect every human being of this world equally, no matter what the cast, religion, and colour of the person.

This book also conveys the message of change. Change can take place no matter how hard the rules are set by society. Human beings can challenge any particular set rule or notion and can try to make lives comfortable. Atticus Finch, throughout the novel, tries to convey the same thing by his activities. he says, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” After reading this quote readers may get a slight idea of Atticus Finch’s morality and his concept of equality. He tries to say that every person has their own individuality which we should respect and not be judgemental.

Tom Robinson is one of the main characters in the novel but a victim of racial discrimination. Mayella falsely accused Tom Robinson of raping her in the novel and everyone believes her easily because she is white. No one believes Tom Robinson because he is black. Atticus Finch is righteous and he tries hard to defend Tom Robinson. Atticus finch teaches readers a lesson of what is right and wrong in the novel.
