Poem: 2014-2020, India

He hated, she hated, they hated, we hated. We still preferred to hide.

A tyrant came along, promised faster trains, the trains that would shine, the trains that would be on time.

There was a condition. Thou shalt not hide thy hate. Thou shalt feel empowered. We obliged.

He was lynched, she was assaulted, they were dehumanized and then an entire population was caged. We offered silence. The shiny trains.

The economy crumbled, the excuses disappeared, the constitution butchered, the masks fell. The shiny trains didn’t matter and we kept going down the drain.
