In the patriarchal country like India feminism has always been a talk of the town. The youth is overplaying about feminism as they assume it makes them cool and dynamic but unfortunately this trend dived away the actual significance of feminism which is equality to women . women don’t say we are physically or mentally equal to men, as it is a known fact that every individual vary in physical and mental strength. Feminism just means equal opportunity , equal pay and equal status in society for both gender.
Government started various schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Rajiv Ghandi National Creche scheme , Mahila E- Haat , One stop centre scheme and SWADHAR Greh Scheme to raise the dignity of women in India but how far have we reached ? are girls educated ? child marriage abolished?Are girls safe in public places? Has domestic violence stopped? New Women became only the myth in our country. People are not ready to accept women as the work professionals and a lady who can be better and more productive than men. They are used to see women as a homemaker and a body who can satisfy their needs. The men of our society cant see women being equal or rather better than them.
We live in a society were we get Nirbhaya and Aarushi Talwar whenever a women tries to do something for herself or think we live in a place were we can walk on roads at night and be safe at our own home. Many activist like Aruna Roy , Medha Patkar , kiran Bedi and Malala Yousafzai took active measures to raise and educate women of India emphasizing on the true meaning of feminism. Government has somewhat elevated a section of women but still there are many who needs to be looked at.
Women can get the power in their hands only, when they start thinking they are no less then the men and can do anything to raise their standard in society. This does not means they have to hold a sword and start hitting the men around them rather they have to protect themself from any form of violence or injustice . They have the right to ask for equal pay for equal work, the right to choose for themself, and the freedom of living in what so ever way they want. However the core meaning of women empowerment should not be misused in fake feminism were women use their right as a weapon to take revenge from their partners or co- workers.
New Women in India is a myth as still there are many Twinkle and Damini how are waiting in heaven to get justice . when we will have no entry of women crime in the police records , a classroom filled of girl child and women returning back to their homes at night. We would happily say we have ‘ NEW WOMEN’ in India .
