Poem: Not Born To Be Bound!

Poet’s note: This poem is dedicated to all the women out there who have to think twice before going out late at night, who do not feel safe in their own country or at their homes, and to all those who have suffered injustice at the hands of the evil society, and who refuse to give up!

“No they didn’t tie her/ with cuffs and chains/but they humiliated her with their naked eyes”. Image has been provided by the poet.

Walking again on that narrow path

through the valley

she remembered her childhood.

How she could never get surfeit of it

the fresh foliage always overwhelmed her,

trees stood tall, as if sheltering the way.

But today she stood silent.

Never before she envied the birds

touching the sky,

or the merry animals

passing by,

maybe she had now sensed the cage around!

No they didn’t tie her

with cuffs and chains,

but they humiliated her with their naked eyes,

yet she was the one to be covered!

It was their actions, their thoughts,

yet she was the one who suffered!

Little did she know,

when she was little

that her life would turn upside down,

but she looked again at the merry animals and the birds,

and said,

“I was not born to be bound!”
