Report Finds Higher Thresholds Of Salt, Fat In Junk Food Than Proposed

The testing on packed food and fast food was carried out by the Environment Monitoring Laboratory of Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Delhi. The lab study revealed that the levels of salt, fat in junk foods were higher than the proposed thresholds.

The study revealed that most of the packaged food and fast food items being sold in India contain high levels of Salt and Fat and levels are higher than the thresholds set by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) which have not yet been notified.

They tested salt, fat, trans fats and carbohydrates in 33 popular junk foods, which include 14 samples of chips, namkeen, instant noodles, and instant soup and 19 samples of burgers, fries, fried chicken, pizza, sandwich, and wraps. All the samples were collected by the CSE from grocery stores and fast food outlets in Delhi and are known to be widely sold and consumed across the country.

 #Markitred is the campaign that CSE wants people to push. “Our health is our business, not the business of industry”, CSE says and it’s absolutely correct.

We should come together to support and stand with the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) in the campaign to Ban Packaged food and fast food items being sold in India contains high levels of salt and fat in them in the interest of Society and our Children.
