How We Are Spreading Awareness About Climate Change In Assam’s Tezpur

Climate, being a part of every form of life, is the ultimate truth. Climate change has brought a threat to all forms of life and it may lead to fiasco if we don’t take caution soon.

Many people say that we are too young and it does not matter what we do, but I have learned that you are never too young or small to make a difference and we should always come together for a cause. We only talk or study about the ailing planet or concepts like sustainable development and environmental protection but rarely feel about it and implement the knowledge. We should accept that climate change is a crisis and act accordingly, we cannot solve a crisis without accepting that it is a crisis.

I have been associated with Rotaract Club of Agnigarh, a youth wing of Rotary International. We have carried out several projects related to climate change and taken several steps to tackle it. I would like to share a little about these.

PROJECT 1

“Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make it a better place
For you and for me”

On the occasion of World Environment Day, 5 June 2018, hosted by 20 BN Assam rifles, Charduar, members of Rotaract club of Agnigarh planted 1500 saplings. 1500 saplings is indeed a significant number but when people come together, perhaps no number is too big and no dream, an impossibility. Behind the swaying, growing saplings, hope and the future seem to be embedded in those plants. Perhaps, the future is not as grim as the doomsday fanatics believe. When just a few people can do so much with a dream, imagine what we can achieve when all of us contribute our bit for the betterment of tomorrow! The tiny saplings which have grown into plants are on their way to becoming trees for tomorrow. These trees will perhaps be a source of inspiration the next time we pass through the place.

PROJECT 2

In a world of melting glaciers and increasing global warming, planting trees is not just a sign of gratitude to mother nature but every citizen’s utmost duty. With the world at high risk of environmental catastrophe, it is our club’s utmost priority to spread awareness about environmental duties of every citizen as well as put those words into action. So on 16th Sept, 2019, we the Rotaract Club of Agnigarh, in a joint effort of Rotary Club of Tezpur, organised a Tree Plantation Drive of 40 saplings at Hathikuli Tea Estate, Kaziranga to promote plantation of trees and its importance.

PROJECT 3

The Rotaract club of Agnigarh, in association with NCC, executed a cycle rally to promote cycling, as well as fuel conservation to have a sustained future for our future generation. A team of 21 cyclers went from Tezpur to Paradise lake, Nagaon. The journey was a long one of four hours but was full of enthusiasm and excitement as we covered around 120 km. There we interacted with the people and talked about our motive and solutions. Then, after an exploration of two hours of the Paradise lake, we returned. It was around 7pm when we reached the point from where we started!

RIDE 2.0 and 3.0 were also organised and we will be organising more such events.
