Poem : Blind

The day my heart
was blessed with sight
was a day of wonder,
painful realization,
the excitement of mission,
and a sense of urgency.

Suddenly I saw
others standing
with hearts wide open,
eyes glowing like dots
flickering against
pressing darkness.

I was sure
this darkness
is soon to be defeated.
After all, it is
in our collective interest
to do so.
How long can we bear its burden?

The heartaches to be moved.

I am struck
by the strength
of heart,
the pain it carries
without breaking,
the longing it endures
of separation enforced
by thick walls
of dark oppression.

But when
it can no longer stand,
it erupts
in violence.

Cut bodies dumped
in sewers of neglect,
wishing the evidence away
in the flow of filth
and in the ensuing darkness
the heart cries
praying fervently
that it was blind.
