Impact of lockdown on labourers

. whole world is facing difficulties
because of COVID-19 and lockdown.
But it hits hard to unorganised
sector workers, who depends on
daily wages
. According to a report of the New
York times, more than 26 millions
American have became jobless, in 5
weeks, inflicting a toll on the labour
force not seen since the great depression.

.In the month of January and February, the jobless claims were 200,000 and now it reached to millions.
.The UK economy is plunging into a
deeper recession than the 2008-09
financial crisis, according to the most reliable data published so far, with
unemployment surging and the public
finances sliding sharply into the red because of coronavirus pandemic.
. Economists said there was huge
uncertainty over the depth of the
coming recession and the speed of the subsequent recovery. Some predict the
downturn will be short and Sharp, but the fear that, like a decade ago, there will be a painful transition to a persistently weaker  path for economic growth.

IMPACT OF LOCKDOWN ON INDIAN LABOURERS :
. In India, over 400 million people work in unorganised sector. And over 120 million are migrant workers, who move from villages to cities for work.
.Migrant labourers and daily wagers
set off for distant villages on foot over 100 kms battling with hunger on
highways. Sometimes many have
mistreated by cops , after some
criticism against cops, cops allowed
NGOs to help. Cops, NGOs, and
concerned citizens lend helping
hands.
. According to a report, in India 14
crores workers lose employment.
. Labourers faces many difficulties while traveling, recently police find 18
migrants workers traveling to UP from
 Mumbai in concrete mixer truck.

Why workers are desperate to leave ?
.Most of the unorganised sector
workers earns RS 100-300 per day.
Without any work they can’t service in
cities as they have no income or money to pay for food, rent and basic needs.
Factories which double up as Home for many have been shut, workers become homeless.
.Some states governments of UP and
Bihar have announced relief packages
to daily wages workers to try to reduce
hardship of the migrants.

IMPACT ON CHILD LABOURERS :

.Children are not the face of this pandemic but they risk being among  it’s biggest victims, a report released  by the United Nations in April had said.
.In India, the crisis is snowballing for
 marginalised children, migrant
childlabourers, Street children, child
beggars and farmers children
trapped Midway, are fighting more than they can at their age. There are 10
millions child labourers in India
according to the 2011 census.
. Recently, on 18 April, Jamlo Madkam,  a 12 years old plantation labourer
died after walking for three days towards her home in  Chattisgadh from Telangana.

. Even most of the child workers have
not returned home from major cities.
According to the 2011 census, Bihar has the second highest numbers of child labourers in the country. The emotional, physical or sexual exploitation of child labourers by employers is reality.
The very few child workers who
have returned home, but have not
been paid their dues.

.While a child worker in Mumbai can still manage to reach his village in Maharashtra. But a child worker in Delhi will not able to reach his village in Bihar. Deprived of food,  they don’t have money even for a phone call to inform their family about their well- being.

IMPACT ON BIHAR LABOURERS :
.Every year lots of people of Bihar
moved to cities in search of jobs. This
Nationwide lockdown huts hard them
as they worked in unorganised sector
and due to lockdown they became
jobless.

.Bihar’s litchi growers, traders, workers faced with a bitter harvest in lockdown. This year, the flowering of
trees indicated a bountiful harvest in
terms of quantity as well as quality of
fruit. There is only one problem,
though the Nationwide lockdown has
created such a disruption in demand
and supply that almost two-thirds of the state’s production may remain unsold.
The sorrows of Bihar’s 45000 odd farmers, labourers and traders  involved in the production, packaging and marketing of the fruit. Almost 60% of litchi growers in Bihar are small farmers and their distress in the time  of lockdown is quite apparent.

. Governments are trying to reduce
their problems, special trains are
running to carry labourers from
different states to their state.
According to a report Bihar
government transfers RS 1000 each
to 284,000 migrant workers.

.Mainly most of the Labourers are
illiterate and due to lack of information and awareness most of
them are unknown about what facilities and relief are provided or announced  by the government.

Conclusion
However, their problems are
increasing day by day. Whole world
is facing difficulties, but labourers of
unorganised sector affected the most.
As many migrants became jobless
homeless and beggars and facing the most difficulties.
