Animal Life Has Value

“It seems this elephant was very unfortunate and unlucky.”
-The Kerala Forest Department spokesperson

A pregnant elephant was killed recently due to eating a pineapple stuffed with firecrackers. Another life lost for the amusement of sick human minds.

It seems she really was unfortunate, to be born in a society so inhuman that it can resort to such despicable acts. As a matter of fact, no person has been arrested for the murder of 2 lives. Yes, 2 lives, it is a shame that animal lives are considered unworthy when compared to lives similar to that of humans.

Quoting the Indian Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals Act, the punishment for administering a dangerous substance on any animals can range from anywhere between ₹25 – 50 and imprisonment up to 3 months, that’s the value of animal lives in India, a pretty cheap consequence for such a ghastly act. Indians seem to be outraged and very keen to point out how we humans betrayed them. We are acting naive, as we fail to acknowledge the fact about what this portrays about our society.

There have been more than enough studies showing that animal cruelty is a stepping stone to violence, making it more and more evident that people who are capable of committing such an act are also capable of being a threat to the lives he/she is surrounded by. It isn’t justified to consider this as a crime against animals, it is a crime against society as a whole.

A mere ₹50 price is quite cheap and non-deterring for a potential criminal that can abet as well as commit crimes against humans if you may. Acknowledging this poppycock is very important in order to deal with the problem at hand which is the violent nature of the inhuman society, which unfortunately amounts to the increasingly high crime rate in the society.
