Trigger warning: sexual abuse
Recently a girl named ‘Anuvaa’ exposed an Instagram group that had unusual activity. It was a group of youngsters from class 11 and 12 students from south Delhi who casually discussed ‘gang-raping’ girls, sexualized and slut-shamed them in screenshots of chats that went viral on Twitter and other social media forums.
It was found that girls were pressurized to send nude pictures in the group. Group members were found to be encouraging Rape Culture in their chatrooms The 15-year-old boy from south Delhi was taken into custody on Sunday by the Delhi police for interrogation. Also, police have identified all the members of the group which was about 20 of them!
Being exposed by the girls, the group members created another Instagram group where they continued the same thing but with fake accounts. The chatroom was named “Bois locker room 2.0”
When the news broke about the girl exposing this chatroom, the Chairman of Delhi Commission for Women – Swati Maliwal issued a notice to the Delhi Police to take strict actions regarding this case. The involved students who were responsible for this act can face following IPC’s
- Section 465 -Forgery
- Section 471 -Using forged Document
- Section 469 -Forgery for purpose of harming reputation
- Section 509 –Intending to insult the modesty of a women
- Under IT Act: 67 and 67 A of IT Act at Cyber Cell of Delhi Police.
The 15-year-old boy, the admin, will be soon presented before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB). Such incidences occur at this age because no proper education regarding sex and such issues is provided from families as well as schools. This is one of the reasons for the promotion of masculine culture in India. We humans, the well-known species of Homo sapiens, the so-called intelligent life in-universe, and our first thought is to force a person to fulfil our desire, all just because it sounds cool? No! We are better than this, each of us is far better than this.
It’s just a matter of time when such online discussions turn into horrible realities. Innocent lives are destroyed by such an incident! These kids are our future; let’s not turn on them when they need answers to some questions. Because if we don’t answer them now, they might end up having the wrong answers! Is it just because we are too shy to discuss it with them?
Apart from this, it was found that pictures of women and underage girls were circulated against their will. A screenshot containing a serious threat about a gang rape came forward, we don’t know whether this was a prank, dare, bet or any such youth crap but one thing we know for sure, it has inflicted humiliation which innocent people have to suffer.
One of the schoolgirls came across such a picture of hers and was wise enough to file a police complaint. This is the kind of courage we require to show the sociopaths today! So let’s not give in to fear of society’s judgemental attitude, but try to be the voice of people who are not being herded!
Let’s be better for ourselves and stand up for the right. We don’t know how many such groups exist out there freely promoting these horrible things, and how many innocent lives are at stake! Let’s kick open the doors of such boys’ locker rooms. So let their voice be heard, and let us be their voice!
