Quick Byte: Did Jessica Lal Get Justice?

This is a story of 1999 when a ‘celebrity barmaid’ was shot dead by Manu Sharma for refusing to offer a drink to wealthy drunk men in a posh restaurant, in Delhi, after the party was over.

This woman was model Jessica Lal, who was shot at on the night of April 3o, 1999, in a club near Mehrauli by the son of a Congress leader, Venod Sharma.

She was shot dead by Manu Sharma that night just for refusing to offer more drinks. He was convicted in 2006 with life imprisonment, but was released recently because of his good behaviour.

It sounds ironic to me, because a man who killed a woman for not serving drinks, who ended a life, can be released due to good behaviour.

A woman lost her life, and life imprisonment was nothing in front of her death.  He is a man who, after being convicted, later got out on parole, and even then made news due to violations. Releasing a man like him is really sad, I feel, as Manu Sharma needed to at least serve more years for the crime he committed, even if not life imprisonment. 15 years in jail is a lot, but a person like him, I think, being jailed for some more years wouldn’t have harmed him. It would have been fair to Jessica’s case.
