Mental Health Awareness: “Life Is A Combination Of Sour, Sweet And Bitter Moments”

TW: Depression

We are a generation of uncertainties. Uncertainty rules us, let it be a relationship or a friendship, career choice or even a simple choice of what dress to wear.

What makes me write this; I don’t have a particular answer for this. But having something to express and detailing it over here gives me a little relief from the heaviness of my heart which I carry right now. Death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput has bound us in a state of not knowing what to say, shocked, maybe kind of loomed inside our guts. It’s a hard warning to all of us to think about why we need better mental health awareness and the need for an open talk.

When a person tries to express their feelings or emotions or if they start acting a little abnormal, we (the society) tend to call them mental or mad, and comments like ‘they should be sent to mental asylum’ start spreading. Or, the next thing that would happen is taking advantage of the vulnerability. Some people among us thinks that being vulnerable is wrong, that it is a weakness; being vulnerable makes others think the particular person is of a ‘loose’ character. We are not accepting the fact that there is no right or wrong which can decide human life; everything related to the living world is evolving and dynamic.

We should really introspect and find out what makes us a human being. We are a generation of uncertainties. Uncertainty rules us, let it be a relationship or a friendship, career choice or even a simple choice of what dress to wear. We are certainly bad at facing the consequences, rather than making the choice. We get confused and forget to stand by the choices we made at first. This makes us tensed or simply upset about what we are doing, eventually leading us to frustration and depression.

People need other people regardless of what they are going through. Sometimes we fail, sometimes we win; life is a journey with ups and downs but overcoming the downs is a tougher job.

We find ourselves as emotionless people. Is that true? We are born with emotions and feelings, they are not acquired qualities, and so do you think a human being can become emotionless? The truth is we continuously try to be one. Sometimes, we feel like everything is our fault, sometimes we think we deserved to be humiliated and blame ourselves but will these blame game actually change what happened unless we fight and move on?

Depression is serious; it is spreading among us like a silent cancer, but we don’t acknowledge the fact. It can be for many reasons, but the factor of being blamed and the fear of vulnerability makes us get preyed on more.

In this busy world, we forget to look beyond ones smile or tears. We even don’t care to give ears to our friends or family when they are in need. Think about what sort of lives we live, we never care about people who are not fair, who are fat, or who are not financially sound. This is enough to make anyone dejected, thinking it’s their fault that they don’t have attractive physical appearance which makes people laugh at them. Isn’t it time to think about these too?

We are human beings; we are living things. We need to give a helping hand to the people who need them. It might not be a huge amount or financial support always; it can be more of a mental or emotional support you can provide; it can be a little time to listen, a hug, a smile, few words, a pat on the shoulders or just allowing them rest their head on your lap. These minute affectionate gestures can actually save lives.

Life is a combination of sour, sweet and bitter moments, and since, we are here to live, so please let’s make sure that we live to our fullest!
