Poem : Once Upon A Time

I’ll deny the elephant killing story

The baby in the womb, the standing in the water, the forgiving, and the gentle surrender, the lessons she gave us before she left

I’ll forget

I’ll forget it happened

I’ll pretend it away

I’ll ostrich me out of it

I’ll not engage in veg-non-veg-vegan debates from here

I’ll not assess what part of killing is eating, what part survival, and what part pleasure

I’ll just know that her forgiving us as she went, her stepping into the water to save her baby instead of someone else, something else, didn’t belong to this mortal world of reasons and trades

I’ll just know that the weight of her grace, of her forgiving surrender, is a weight on the collective conscience human beings will have to live with, tomorrow and forever

But then, we are used to carrying weights on our conscience

That alone makes us rule the world.
