Letter From Final Year Law Students On Online Exams: Why Are Authorities Not Listening?

We, final year law students of Amity University, Rajasthan, want to throw some light over the recent announcements regarding our end semester examinations and share our grievances.

As per the notice issued by the University, we are directed to appear for an online semester examination, which would require a well-established, uninterrupted network for a continuous duration of three hours, in addition to a laptop or desktop with a properly-functioning webcam.

The fact that most of us left our devices in our hostels/PGs at the time of the announcement of the lockdown, a precautionary measure, on 21st March is not being taken into consideration. We are devoid of resources including our books and notes that we left in our hostel.

In case of any interruption in the network or technical error, our examination would get cancelled, which in turn would make us appear for supplementary exams.

What is worrying us the most is that a majority of us do not have proper access to the internet, as currently, we are residing in different areas of the country. In case of any interruption in the network or technical error, our examination would get cancelled, which in turn would make us appear for supplementary exams. We have worked hard for the past five years to maintain a good academic record and jeopardising it on account of some technical issues will be fair to us on no account.

We duly communicated our grievances to the authorities, but there was no sensibility on their part to provide us with any solution. They have arbitrarily left us with no choice.  The issue of electricity cut off is usual during summers in many parts of the country, resulting in an improper internet connection. It is not feasible for every student to be equipped with required internet connection to appear in the online examinations.

Understanding the present situation, we have no problem in appearing for online examinations, all we have been asking for is to conduct it in a more reasonable fashion by addressing the abovementioned grievances.
