Pir Muhammad Munish: The Forgotten Hero

Champaran Satyagraha, a remarkable event of Indian Freedom Movement led by Mahatama Gandhi. Chamaparan was always the center of Indian revolutionary movement. Champaran gave many Freedom Fighters like

Pt.Kamal Nath Tiwari.

Pt. Kamal Nath Tiwari, a HSRA leader involved  in Assembly Bomb Blast and Kakori Case, was in Cellular Jail with Bahagt Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev and also participated  in hunger strike with Shaheed-e-Aazam. Later served as Deputy Loksabha Speaker and Chairman of estimate Committee. He was MP from Bettiah and Bagaha (Now Valmikinagar).

Pt. Rajkumar Shukla

Pt. Rajkumar Shukla, the one behind Champaran  Satyagraha, he was the one to ask Gandhi to come to Champaran and was with Mahatama Gandhi during Indian Freedom Movement.

Champaran gave many Leaders to Indian Freedom Movement but today we remember  only few, many are still unknown.

Champaran Satyagraha and Munish

It was not an easy task to bring Mahatama Gandhi to Champaran. He was the supreme leader of Congress party then. Champaran issue was already ignored by many leaders. Even Gandhi was not ready to come to Champaran but when he read an article related to Chamaparan in ‘Prabhat’ (a Daily Newspaper) written by Pir Muhammad Munish; he agreed.

Pir Muhammad  Munish always guided Rajkumar Shukla. He was also named as Badmash Patrakar by British Government when he was working with Mahatama Gandhi.

In a letter found in Dr.B.B Mishra,  selected  documents on Mahatama Gandhi’s Freedom  Movement in Champaran 1917-18, Govt of Bihar, secretariat Press Patna, 1963 it was written that “Pir Muhammad of Bettiah is a man of no position and no means, a dangerous man, is practically a Badmash”

When he was a teacher in Raj School Bettiah, he was dismissed because of his involvement  in Gandhi’s Freedom Movement and his revolutionary articles.

In a letter it was written that …Mr. Gandhi got offers of assistance, the most prominent is Pir Mohammed. I have not full details of his Career, but either Whitty or Marshan could give them. He was a teacher in the Raj School.  He was dismissed from his post for virulent  attacks on local management published in or about 1915 in the press.

He was a brilliant journalist, his revolutionary articles have great impact on Champaran Satyagraha. Mahatama and many others leaders were impressed by his way of writing.

Poverty and Ignorance.

Revolutionaries have fame but they have very low wealth. Same was in the case of Pir Mohammed Munish. He was so busy in his revolutionary articles that he barely stepped in his farm which results in the early demise of his only son due to Tuberculosis, after that Munish never written a single word. He was forgotten by all his fellow workers and Indian Government.  Even after 70+years of independence, we barely know our real heroes.
