Poem : I Can’t Breathe

Now is the time, the purpose, the season to listen and heal
Said Joe Biden and there couldn’t be a time more appropriate
For America and the rest of the world to hear it,

For the protests for racial justice
Prompted by the murder of George Floyd
Did something more than provoke a war for justice
It made America question its deep-rooted racial inequality.

The police brutality, the white superiority
In short, everything that’s wrong in the “land of the free”
Why the fatality rate is 2.8 times higher for the black community,
Why law enforcement can afford these deaths so casually?

There’s been the black lives matter movement for a while
But when a person begs “I can’t breathe”
It pushes the neutrals too to take a stand
And that’s when the public as a whole decides
That America is done with the Confederate statues
That Aunt Jemima and its centuries-old racism
Needs to be wiped away.

Britain answered the call and the East world did too
The blackout Tuesday, the suspension of the Minneapolis cops
Guilty of a broad daylight murder of an American subject
Are proof America won’t take this injustice anymore

Maybe 2020 has brought destruction unprecedented in the history of the world
But the new normal built on its ruins
Will be unaware of inequality
And maybe this will bring in the new start
The world has waited for.
