Note: This article is regarding the recent Assam Floods that have hit during the peak of the pandemic.
Floods can be dangerous. They have been ruthless and devastating on generations of families in Assam time and again. This multi-faceted calamity not only renders everyone out there in the Brahmaputra Valley homeless, but can also crush one’s mental agony and at its worst. tear a man to death.
Ironically, these floods are biased when it comes to their effect. In Assam, people living in thatched and mud houses, and not concrete buildings, are affected the most. Daily wage earners are ripped off their food and clothing, but nothing happens to salary earners.
Life is erratic, and so are these Assam floods. The 2019 Brahmaputra floods affected a total of 52,59,142 people and 1,63,962.02 hectares of crop area across 30 districts in Assam. This year, the number might go far higher and unfortunately, we all are living in the middle of a pandemic where social distancing is a must.
And here comes, Friends of Floods — a youth-led flood relief and fund raising campaign to help those in need. We plan to help the needy by whichever means we can, complying with the norms laid down by the government during this pandemic. We aren’t yet registered as an NGO, but we plan to do it right after the pandemic ends. Our resources are always national, but our cries, agony and problems are not.
Be it national media or eminent people, Assam has always been neglected and overlooked by mainland India with a stepmotherly attitude. But this time, we need your help. Come up with your smallest contribution, as every drop counts and makes a mighty ocean.
