Abortion, despite being an essential health service, is treated as a taboo in most societies. The source of this stigma is often our immediate surroundings – families, friends, and the media. As part of The YP Foundation’s commitment to tackling stigma around abortion, we asked young people in our network to describe the first time they heard the word “abortion”. Here’s what we got!
मेरा एक बढ़ा परिवार है जिसमे मम्मी, पापा, 2 बड़े भाई और 2 भाभियाँ है । बड़ी भाभी की 2 बेटियां और छोटी भाभी की एक बेटी है । गर्भसमापन शब्द मैंने पहली बार किसी दूसरे शब्दों में सुना, जो था सफ़िया करना । जब मैंने देखा की मेरी बड़ी भाभी सफ़िया कराने के लिए मेरी मम्मी और छोटी भाभी से बात कर रही है, तो मुझे इसके बारे में जानने में दिलचस्पी बढ़ गई । तब मैंने अपने स्कूल के दोस्तों से पूछा की ये सफ़िया कराना क्या होता है । तब कुछ दोस्तों को इसके बारे में थोड़ा बहुत पता था तो उन्होंने बताया की जब किसी लड़की के पेट में बच्चा होता है और घर वाले उसे नहीं चाहते, या बच्चा पेट में मर जाता है, तो अस्पताल में ऑपरेशन से बच्चे को निकाल दिया जाता है । ये बातेऺ तब की है जब मैऺ स्कूल में कक्षा 7 में था लेकिन अब भी मुझे गर्भसमापन के बारे में पूरी जानकारी नहीं मिल पाई थी । जब मैऺ कालेज में आया तब मुझे दोस्तों व कुछ किताबों के माध्यम से पता चला कि सफ़िया कराने का सही मतलब गर्भसमापन होता है ।
Translation: I have a big family. I live with my mother, father, two of my older brothers, and their wives. I first heard the word abortion when my sisters-in-law were talking about it. They did not use the word abortion though. Instead, they called it as “cleaning up”. After that I got very curious to know what the word meant. I asked my school friends but to no avail. Till I was in class 7, I couldn’t grasp what the word meant. It was only when I was in college that I finally got to know what “cleaning up” meant. My friends and books gave me the correct translation of the word, which was “abortion”.
This story is one of many submissions that we received. The YP Foundation’s Abortion Campaign works towards destigmatising abortion and increasing access to safe and comprehensive abortion care services. We engage with young people to advocate for abortion as a reproductive right, especially among marine fisherfolk in Kerala and tea plantation labourers in Assam.
