Quick Bytes: Women Comprise 10% Of Gurugram Police, But Lack Basic Facilities At The Station

An RTI filed by Harinder Dhingra, a resident of Gurugram, revealed that out of 43 police stations in the city, 23 of them don’t have the facility of separate lock-ups.

Moreover, it also disclosed the fact that 9 police stations in the city itself don’t have toilets for women staff.

Gurugram has 6,100 police officers, of which 610 personnel are women. In other words, 10% of the force constitutes women.

The city is divided into four police districts, namely Gurugram (East), Gurugram (West), Gurugram (South) and Manesar.

New Colony, DLF Phase-3, Sushant Lok, Bajghera, Sector 29, Shivaji Nagar, KMP, Traffic PS-1 and Traffic- 2 are the stations which don’t have a provision for separate toilets for women. New Colony has 10 women cops while DLF Phase-3 and Sushant Lok, both have 7 women police officers each. Bajghera has 7 women cops; Sector 29 has 8 women personnel; and 10 women police officers in New Colony as well as Shivaji Nagar. Currently, KMP and two traffic police stations don’t have women officers.

Whereas, City Sohna, Badshapur, Bhondsi, Sector 65, DLF Phase-3, DLF Phase-1, Sector 50, Sector 53, Sushant Lok, Metro, Sector 40, Shivaji Nagar, Sector 10 A, Bajghera, Rajendra Park, Udyog Vihar, Sector 18, Sector 9 A, Sector 14, New Colony, Bilaspur, Kherki Daula and Women (west) police stations don’t have separate lock-up facility for women.

According to a police officer, earlier there were few women personnel in the force. A senior cop said, “Over the years, the number of women in the police force has increased and with that, the infrastructure has also been updated. Now only nine police stations don’t have separate toilets for women.”

He further added that the construction work for new police stations at few places is on, and they will have all the facilities, including crèche and a play zone.
