TW: Rape

Anand Chandra Majhi, the inspector-in-charge of Biramitrapur, along with other officials, allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl and then tried to get an abortion, reports said. The police officer in the tribal-dominated area was suspended on Friday, June 26, after he was allegedly involved in the gang rape and subsequent abortion, over two months, of the minor girl.

Kavita Jalan, the deputy inspector general of police (Western Range) said that a case has been registered against the accused, including a doctor involved in the abortion attempt.

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, “The girl visited the Biramitrapur area on March 25 to see a fair, but it was cancelled last minute due to the nation-wide lockdown. The girl deserted and couldn’t reach home. She was stranded and roaming near the bus stand when a police patrolling team saw her and brought her to the police station.”

Following this, Inspector Majhi, among other men, allegedly raped her at the police station and she was dropped home the next day. Yet, she was allegedly called to the police station repeatedly and raped by the inspector and other police officials. The girl later got pregnant, following which, Majhi attempted to get an abortion done.

S Jena, the district child protection officer of Sundargarh, who came to know about the crime, filed a complaint at the Raiboga police against Majhi, another police personnel, the doctor who conducted the abortion at a community health centre, the stepfather of the girl and two others, as Hindustan Times reported.

Moreover, this isn’t the first time a minor girl was abducted and raped in Odisha.
