Quick Bytes: Annual Assam Floods Wreak Havoc In 48.07 Lakh Lives This Year

Unfortunately, 92 people have lost their life due to the floods and more than, 48.07 lakh people are affected.

Assam is submerged in water once again, like every year. Out of 33 districts, 30 districts are affected heavily by Assam floods. According to the data provided by the Home Ministry, between May 22 to July 15, 4,766 villages had been submerged in floods. Considering the drastic situation of flood, more than 1.28 lakh people have been forced to leave their homes. These people are presently staying in relief camps. Unfortunately, 92 people have lost their life due to the floods and more than, 48.07 lakh people are affected.

According to the state statistics, earlier, floods affected Assam once in the duration of 4–5 years. However, the situation is detoriating now. Now, floods damage Assam every year. Assam is a state that is entirely located in the river valley. The total area of this state is 78,438 sq km. Out of this, 56,194 sq km lies in the valley of the Brahamputra river. The rest of the area, that is 22,244 sq km., is situated in the valley of the Barak river.

Reports of the Assam’s Ministry of Environment state that floods devastated an area of 3,000 sq km. of cultivated land in Assam between the year of 1954 and 2015. Data convey that, on an average, the state suffered a loss of 200 crore every year because of floods.
