Quick Bytes: Sanitary Workers’ Strike in Kumbakonam For Their Full Daily Wage

On Wednesday morning, daily wage labourers working for sanitary activities staged a demonstration demanding full pay in Tamil Nadu’s Kumbakonam municipality.

A private contractor enrolled 250 daily wage workers for the work, which includes extracting the garbage from particular areas to transporting it to the compost yard.

According to the contractor’s claims, he promised with certainty to pay ₹385 as daily wage; but didn’t fulfil his obligation as alleged by the labourers.

Among 250 workers, twenty-five of them raised their voices against the misconduct by the contractor, and which led to their way out of the occupation.

Moreover, the other fellow workers resorted to strike outside the contractor’s office while being off duty for not receiving the full daily wage as promised.

After getting to know about the labourers’ protest, the Municipal Commissioner Lakshmi immediately reached the spot and guaranteed them that their problem would be resolved in a day or two.

It was then followed by the discontinuation of their strike, and they restarted the sanitary operations, hopeful of their full daily wage.
